WHAT ARE THE MARYLAND REGULATIONS FOR PROOF OF NEGATIVE COGGINS?
The Coggins test is a test for Equine Infectious Anemia, or EIA. This is a deadly infectious disease of horses. Click here for more information from the Merck Veterinary Manual.
The state of Maryland has specific regulations regarding EIA - click here for the regulations.
For horse shows in Maryland, the following Maryland regulation applies:
CHAPTER 12 EQUINE INFECTIOUS ANEMIA
.03 Test Requirements.
B. For Exhibition. All equines over 9 months old assembled for supervised exhibition in the State shall have been found negative to an official test for equine infectious anemia made within 12 months before the date of the event. The supervisor of the event shall ascertain that a copy of the official negative test results accompanies each equine to the event and shall make a list of the entries and their test status available for inspection by a representative of the Secretary upon request.
What does this mean for FADS shows? All FADS shows require a copy of a negative Coggins test within 12 months of the show date. If such a test result is not available, the horse must be removed from the show grounds immediately and therefore may not participate in the show. This is considered a scratch; therefore, any unpaid ride fees still must be paid.
